View Full Version : some help please...
hi all,
please can somebody help me.
after being on my computer for about 1 hour, i cannot open different files on my desk top and there seems to be letters missing here and there. also no matter what file i try to use i get the pop up error of this program has performed an illegal operation. and it will not allow me to shut down the computer the proper way.
after restarting the computor by the mains plug all is fine and then it starts again.
not knowing about all this sort of stuff, could it be a virus? if it is how and where do i go to make my computer better

1st I would run your computer though this FREE virus scan to rule out a virus, then in the help on your browser lookup drwatson and run that to help pinpiont the error program(s)

ok Dean help is here.
first are you really sure it is not a virus? you say icons appear randomly? so if you try to put your mouse over one does it jump around on the screen? that will be a virus.
try this, click on start then run. in the box type regedit, then hit ok or enter. if that opens up fine, go ahead and close it. if you can't you might be in trouble.
I would use Mcafee's online free virus scanner and check it. Personally I don't trust anybody else to scan my computer.
if all that says you are virus free then your power supply might be going out. I have seen some weird stuff happen when they are on the way out.
let us know what you find.

Ill tell you what I think it is. I had something just like this happen to my laptop, and what was the culprit>? Ram. My ram was bad (probably from 10,000 hours on HTMLForums!) :D Take your pc down to a local repair facility. Usually they will do a full check for a few bucks. Tell them whats happening, then let them see whats up. Much cheaper than replacing the RAM if thats not it. However bad, low, malfunctioning ram will also cause wier crazy xany stuff like that to happen.
Hi all,
it is with deep regret that my computer died last evening, the cause, un-known:(
however, we did manage to resuscitate it, but it had suffered sever irretrievable brain damage.
the loss of memory and not recognising its owner was heart breaking, but it now seems to be well on the way to a reasonable recovery after being 'booted' up its a..r..s..e..
thank you to all for your help, we will once again return to annoy everyone with our questions...:D

so what was the prognosis???
hi scoutt,
trying to do the recovery didnt work, so we reformated the computer and started over...
That's the answer to most of life's problems. Re start from scratch. Alternative you could have tried hitting it very hard.
