View Full Version : Why is Flickr making money?

www.Flickr.com charges if you want to upload more than 200 pics and have more than 3 folders. I see that a ton of people are paying to do this. Why do it when you can go to another free image service without these strict limitations?

I'm asking from a business perspective. This is not a rant.

when people get used to a software they rather pay than move away from a good UI

I agree with Vege - while I don't have a flickr account, I have done a similar thing on another website (completely different to flickr) where there are free alternatives, but they just don't provide the same quality or user experience... I only paid something like $20 for a lifetime membership at www.librarything.com - I don't know how that compares with flickr, but I thought it was a great deal for being able to expand my online library past the free account limit

It was always very popular, and it has a clean and solid design with few ads. Plus I think the images are compressed less when you upload than on Photobucket and such.

I also agree with Vege; no other points to make.

It may also be that other free sites like photobucket have ads, flickr does not

The majority of people are creatures of habit. They get used to a set routine. And many don't like change. PLus you have to move all your photoes takes a little time. Some people aren't that computer savy and don't want to learn a way when they have one that works

I use more than one photo account. That solves the issue

Basically I still think photobucket offers the most features including a variety of slides that you can embed. I like the fact they don't shrink your pics like Picassa does.

I also do use flickr but not as much.

i noticed when i upload in flickr, your pictures can easily be found in google when they are searched... i dunno if its true to others.
its like facebook...it normally puts you on the first pages of the search engines.
