Many web users have heard the buzz about "web 2.0", but are still struggling to get a firm grip on what it means. There are several things that help to define what makes a good web 2.0 website, which includes engagement of its users through direct participation and contribution, often to the degree that the content of the website is entirely user driven, as well as a general clean and simple to use layout and interface.
Need examples of what makes a web 2.0 website? In this thread our members will list various web 2.0 websites and provide a description explaining what makes that website a web 2.0 website. If you are familiar with a web 2.0 website that is not already in the list, please post the title, URL, as well as a description of why that website earns a place in the web 2.0 genre.
The first web 2.0 website that comes to mind is Digg:
Title:Digg
URL:http://www.digg.com
What is Digg? Digg is a social news contribution website.
Why is Digg a Web 2.0 Website?
Digg is the epitome of web 2.0 websites, as every segment of Digg requires community participation. Key 2.0 features:
1. All news stories listed are submitted by community
2. Offers code to place on users websites to allow their own community to contribute their stories to Digg for them.
3. User comment features allows community to comment on and discuss submissions.
4. Offers wide variety of user API tools
http://apidoc.digg.com/
5. Offers various widgets and tools to further maintain interaction with the website:
http://digg.com/tools/
6. Offers full RSS syndication
http://digg.com/about-rss
7. Encourages community further with "town hall" interactions with users:
http://digg.com/townhall
8. Has a blog section with fresh updates from their crew:
http://blog.digg.com/
9. Has a labs section which offers tools to view the site's content in alternative methods:
http://labs.digg.com/
10. Lastly, Digg offers a simple navigational structure, along with a very light and simple design without any cumbersome, superfluous, or secondary links within the top fold of the page.
In sum, Digg is driven and promoted solely by its loyal user base, and offers a variety of ways to interact with the website, even after your visit has ended. This makes Digg a classic full fledged web 2.0 website.

kinda gotten hooked on some of the Facebook games, but I suspect that'll fade once the novelty wears off. My favourite, though, has got to be right here. I learn things from other folks and get the chance to help newcomers (a heady feeling, one you can get addicted to, you know). I'm usually in several times a day, but recently, I've only managed once or twice.Digg is the epitome of web 2.0 websites, as every segment of Digg requires community participation. Key 2.0 features:

how's about we compile a nice Web 2.0 Checklist for users who wish to create Web 2.0 but not have to go through reading pages and pages. Something simple!
I'll just add a few thoughts:

to be honest I think the term web 2.0 is simply a fad amongst some web designers and developers. The idea that all websites must be community driven to be an "evolved" website is just a tad bit silly.
Sure websites and their means and motivations of design will always change and evolve over time, but I don't think you can simply summarize a moment in the time of website design to be a complete turning point of Internet functionality and web development such as the term web 2.0 seems to attempt.
Yes, "web 2.0" websites look nice and sleek and they offer a lot of interactive features, but to say that right now in 2008 that web 2.0 is in anyway the new standard of website design is just a little premature.
I'm not saying I don't support the ideals of web 2.0, but I'm a little weary of web designers accusing non web 2.0 qualifying websites as being "sub standard" when in many cases that said website is more useful and astheticly pleasing.

I think web 2.0 is a great idea. However I do think it is a drop overrated. How many people really dig your site.
I guess you need to come up with really good stories. Web 2.0 is great however on your normal flat money making web site. It does not do much good. Put on a bookmarking button and forget web 2.0 for now.

The term "Web 2.0" describes the changing trends in the use of World Wide Web technology and web design that aim to enhance creativity, communications, secure information sharing, collaboration and functionality of the web. Web 2.0 concepts have led to the development and evolution of web culture communities and hosted services, such as social-networking sites, video sharing sites, wikis, blogs, and folksonomies. The term became notable after the first O'Reilly Media Web 2.0 conference in 2004.[1][2] Although the term suggests a new version of the World Wide Web, it does not refer to an update to any technical specifications, but rather to changes in the ways software developers and end-users utilize the Web. According to Tim O'Reilly:
“ Web 2.0 is the business revolution in the computer industry caused by the move to the Internet as a platform, and an attempt to understand the rules for success on that new platform.

My understanding of Web 2.0 was not just that it has the capabilities for community but also that uses the more modern, new, ways of coding the site and interacting with the users. For example, Web 2.0 sites tend to have a cleaner interface with interactive functions that don't take you away from the page, like opening an AJAX window as an overlay of the main page.

Wouldn't any CMS be considered 2.0? It's not about design, it's about capability too right?
