Make ___ Your Homepage

I noticed there are a lot of sites out there with a link that says something similar to this.

"Make _____.com Your Homepage!"

Usually however, Clicking it just takes you to a page with the step by step instructions for setting the homepage depending on your browser.

I was wondering if there is a way to do this through some sort of script? That could just add the page as the homepage in the background.

Obviously, I can understand why something like this might be disabled to prevent any sort of browser hijacking or other malicious intentions. But even still, if it is at all possible I'd like to know how to do it/what it takes.
