So, I just saw Talladega Nights this last weekend and it seemed to continue a trend I've seen over the last few years. The category of "stupid, nonsensical, funny" movies has slowly trended toward just plain "stupid"

I haven't seen Blades of Glory or Semi-Pro and I just flat-out refuse to watch that Walking Hard (or whatever it's called) but I've heard that none of them are really funny at all.

I mean, when you look back at the beginning of these types of movies....
Mel Brooks
Leslie Nielson
...even Adam Sandler....
those were darn funny movies that have survived decades and are still watched today. Spaceballs, Blazing Saddles, Airplane, Happy Gilmore....those are funny everytime I watch them. However, I don't see myself ever wanting to watch Talladega Nights ever again. It's not that it offended me into turning it off. It's not that I grossed out at certain things or any of that. It's that it simply was not that funny.....which left it being just plain stupid.

Has anyone else started feeling this way? Maybe it's just me. I don't know. I just know that I love the occasional mind-numbing, totally-stupid side-splitting comedies and I just haven't seen a new one in a while now :(

I liked walk hard the best out of all of the ones you just listed and blades of glory a close second to that. I didn't like talladega nights AT ALL.

I actually have a walk hard t-shirt on as I am typing this (my work gets all sorts of movie promo stuff).

I guess it's just a matter of opinion really...for instant I hate hate hate the movie Airplane and don't think there's anything funny about it (I'd rather gouge my eyes out then have to sit through it) and I'm not too crazy about blazing saddles either but spaceballs is a great movie.

I didn't think any of the american pie movies were worth watching, I thought knocked up was boring, I avoided superbad based on what other people told me about it, and Napoleon dynamite was a hack job disguised in bad clothes and cheesy 80s music.

While I agree with your sentiments, I think you missed the mark on the recent movies that were truly awful (or maybe I’m just soft on Will Ferrell because I liked him on SNL back in the day). Some of the worst spoof-like comedy movies out there are Date Movie, Epic Movie (probably, only saw the previews and a few random scenes on cable - refused to watch it after how bad date movie was) and probably super hero movie (have only seen the previews, but looks horrible). I got a few chuckles from taladaga and blades of glory (although blades was pretty bad), haven't seen but "Walk Hard" yet, but probably will, just because it can be funny to see Will Ferrell be a goof even if the movie isn't great. However, Date Movie was just intolerable... as adapted from a line in an Adam Sandler movie... "everyone here is now dumber for having seen this movie". I'd also like to through "Top Secret" into the ring of memorable spoofy/goofy classics, and Anchorman into the list of bad movies (this was one Will Ferrell movie that was just too far out there for me).

I liked Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein. Mel Brooks and Gene Wilder make a good pair, but the movies I'm seeing now don't do a thing for me. "Stupid to the bone" is a better description of them.

The worst part is that I know a few people who think that sort of thing is funny and try to bring the movie lines into everyday conversation. <sigh>

I know I'll get a lot of flack for this but anything with Jim Carrey is as much fun as an all-night dentist.

I have to disagree with all those movies you said were "stupid." they are definitely not the funniest movies that have come out, but after you watch them once and watch it again it is even funnier than the first time. The last really really stupid movie i watched wasn't a comedy but it was retarded - Michael Clayton.

Yeah most ....well close to all the movies out there suck. It really irritates me because those make all the money and the ones worth watching no 1 ever sees.

Makes you feel like the world is getting more stupid by the minute :(
