Came across this today.....

I was trying to find a font that matched up with one that some previous designers had used. After cycling through pages of fonts, I was about to give up when I came across this tool.

WhatTheFont?! (http://www.myfonts.com/WhatTheFont/)

:P

It's just a friggin awesome lil tool.....go ahead.....grab any image with some text and play around.

See if you can fool it :)

that is a pretty cool tool - wonder if they keep the database up to date regularly?

still - that will be a very useful link for all those "what font is this" questions we get - nice find, Putts

there are quite a few free fonts out there - some more are released under a non-commercial licence - but the majority of fonts are created works, which tends to mean that there's a creator trying to buy some butter for his bread...

there are lots of free font sites out there like www.dafont.com or www.1001freefonts.com

However, this is the only site where I've ever seen a tool like this for determining font types.

Even if you don't want to pay for the fonts, they will provide keyword descriptions of the fonts and you can then use that to find free fonts at the other sites.

E.G. I took the text part of the HTMLForums logo (attached) and used WhatTheFont on that and it said the font was Kagan. Kagan is not offered at any free sites (that I could find) but when I looked at the "Font Family" page at myfonts, I saw that one of the keywords for the font was Headline. At 1001freefonts, I found a category called Headlines and, while I was not able to find the exact font, I was able to find similar fonts.

Also, in the "web world" it has been considered Snafu now for a long time to actually pay for something you can find on the internet. I know it might be crazy talk, but if you can afford it, you might actually consider buying a font if you really like it. Some of these font designers put a lot of time and effort into their work and when they create something really nice, it's nice to reward. Given all that, $20+ seems steep to me for a font but it does seem to be the going rate :\

$20 may seem like a lot, but you're actually getting several fonts of different sizes and possibly bold and italic versions of the same font in varying sizes as well.
